There are 4 main types of essays: persuasive, narrative, expository, and descriptive essays. Each of these has its own format and it is up to the essay writers to know what they are going to write. The following are the types of essays in academic writing.

• Persuasive Essays

A writer explores facts on the assigned topic, gathers and evaluates evidence. Then he or she takes a stand for or against the topic. The writer is also required to include their opinion concerning the evidence and the topic itself. A short persuasive essay uses the five-paragraph format; although there are also longer persuasive says. Among the 4 types of essays, a persuasive essay is likely the toughest to write.

• Narrative Essays
Narrative essays are all about story telling. Short stories and book reports are the 2 types of narrative essays. A narrative essay has a standard format regardless of the topic.
• For a story format, all parts of the story – characters, plot, setting, themes etc. – must be included.
• If it is a book report, the narrative has to be informative; do not retell the whole book.
• Like other types, narrative essays should have a thesis statement.

Expository essays are almost similar to persuasive essays. They involve researching an idea, assessing the evidence, explaining the idea, and backing the presentation with a strong argument. The format of an expository essay is described below.

• Thesis statement – that primarily focuses on the assigned topic – is always within the first paragraph of the essay.

• There must be a clear and sensible transition between the introductory paragraph, body paragraphs and conclusion paragraph. A definitive transition helps to maintain a logic flow of the essay and enables the reader to understand the topic better.

• Each body paragraph must include a point and evidence to support the thesis statement. To avoid confusion, do not discuss more than one ideas in one paragraph.

• Repeat the thesis and expound on it in the conclusion paragraph. Include the evidence you revealed in the body paragraphs. Never add new information or idea here. You want help with your expository essay? Place an order.
